Are your AWS workloads 100% efficient?

One additional cloudtrail = $$$ drain

Hi,

It’s Pritesh, Founder of Helyx.

CloudTrail is great. It gives you visibility, audit trails, and a history of everything happening in your AWS account.

But here’s the catch: if you’re not careful, it can quietly inflate your cloud bill.

Every event you log, every trail you create, every S3 bucket you send logs to — it all adds up.

Here’s how to get the audit coverage you need without overpaying:

1. Only log what matters.
You don’t need every single read event for every service. Focus on management and write events, which are the ones auditors actually care about.

2. Consolidate trails.
Multiple overlapping trails? Each one costs more. A single trail per region usually covers everything you need.

3. Optimize S3 storage.
Use lifecycle policies to move older logs to Glacier or Deep Archive. Logs you rarely access shouldn’t sit in Standard S3 forever.

4. Compress everything.
CloudTrail delivers logs in gzip — make sure it stays that way. Every megabyte counts.

5. Avoid unnecessary integrations.
Don’t send CloudTrail logs to multiple services unless it’s required. More destinations = more cost.

Follow these steps and you’ll get the audit coverage you need without paying for every extra log or trail.
